Trecking around Iceland, Day 2, part three Secretive Wrecked DC-3 Plane on Sólheimasandur

Secretive Wrecked DC-3 Plane on Sólheimasandur

Leave Highway 1, We drive on the unpaved gravel roads for quite a while. Looking ahead, surrounded by a barren, occasionally encounter a passing oncoming car, telling us we are on the right way.  We drive for few kilometers alone, then we arrive the secretive crash site.

It is the 1973 US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 Wreckage. It made an emergency landing because of bad weather in Iceland. Fortunately no casualties. Four decades passed,  the wreckage left here, the barren black soil, made Iceland secretive and bizarre.

[Tips] How to find the crash site?

We can say the crash site is a place of interest, because here run into a few tourists come specifically; We also can say it is not a place of attraction,  because no clearly identified, it is easy to miss.

If you use Google Map Navigation (car in Iceland, you can use the Google Map navigation directly on the phone, we're using this), you can search for "Path to Wrecked DC-3 Plane on Sólheimasandur", the position is not accurate, but for reference, at least in the vicinity remind you. Someone provide more precise GPS coordinates, from Highway 1 to leave the coordinates (63.4912391, -19.3632810), the position coordinates of the crash (63.459523, -19.364618). Specifically refer to the following article.
